How Vion Africa Travel uses cookies and similar technologies on this website.

This Cookie Policy explains the cookies and similar technologies used on the Vion Africa Travel (“Vion”, “we”, “us”) website, why we use them and how you can control them. It should be read together with our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle personal information more generally.

What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that a website stores in your browser. They let the website, or a service it uses, recognise your browser or remember information between pages and visits.

Websites can also use similar technologies, such as browser storage (for example IndexedDB), which keep information on your device in much the same way. In this policy, “cookies” covers both; the table in section 4 shows which is which.

How We Use Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies only:

  • to make our website work — for example, to connect it to the database that delivers our content and receives your enquiries, and to remember your cookie choices;
  • with your permission, to measure how our website is used with Google Analytics, so that we can improve it;
  • with your permission, to show optional embedded content such as Google Maps.

Optional technologies stay off until you choose to allow them. We do not use advertising, remarketing or social media tracking cookies. Links to WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and other websites do not place cookies through our website; once you follow one, that website’s own policies apply.

Types of Cookies We Use

Strictly Necessary

These are needed for our website to work, so they are always active and cannot be switched off in our cookie preferences. They are not used for analytics or advertising and do not follow you to other websites. You can block or delete them in your browser settings; if you delete the cookie that stores your choices, we will ask for your choice again.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4, provided by Google, to understand how visitors use our website — for example which pages are viewed, how visitors arrive, the type of device and browser used and approximate location. When an enquiry form is sent successfully, we record that a form was submitted, but we never send your name, email address, phone number or message to Google Analytics.

Google Analytics loads only after you accept analytics cookies. Our website turns off Google signals and ad personalisation for it, so the information is used to measure our website, not for advertising.

Functional

Functional technologies provide optional features from other providers:

  • Google Maps. Interactive maps on our Contact page and some accommodation pages. A map loads only if you allow functional content, or when you choose “Show Map” for that map. When a map loads, Google receives your IP address and browser details and may use its own cookies — for example, cookies already in your browser if you are signed in to a Google account. No new cookies were set by the map in our testing.
  • Live chat. Our website is set up for a tawk.to live chat, but the chat is not currently available. If we make it available, it will load only if you allow functional content, and we will update this policy to list the cookies it uses.

We do not use marketing or advertising cookies, so there is no marketing category in our cookie preferences.

Managing Your Choices

When you first visit, we ask whether you accept or reject optional cookies, or you can choose category by category. Until you choose, optional technologies stay off. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time:

“Cookie Preferences” is also in the footer of every page. When you switch a category off:

  • Analytics — Google Analytics stops sending information straight away, we delete the _ga cookies our website can reach, and it is not loaded again.
  • Functional — embedded maps are replaced by the “Show Map” option, and live chat (when available) is not loaded on later pages.

Withdrawing your choice does not affect information already collected while it was allowed.

Your choice is stored in the vion_cookie_consent cookie for 6 months and applies only to the browser and device you made it on. After 6 months, or if we change the kinds of cookies we use, we will ask you again.

Browser Settings

You can also block or delete cookies and site data in your browser settings, and stop Google Analytics on all websites with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on (opens in a new tab).

Changes to This Cookie Policy

We will update this policy when the cookies or similar technologies on our website change. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised.
