Overview
About Katavi National Park
Katavi National Park, located in the remote western part of Tanzania, is one of the country's most pristine and least-visited parks. Covering approximately 4,471 square kilometers, it offers a truly wild and unspoiled safari experience, teeming with wildlife and dramatic landscapes.
Katavi National Park is renowned for its high concentrations of wildlife, particularly during the dry season.
The park's floodplains and river systems attract large herds of buffalo and elephants, with numbers reaching into the thousands. Predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas are commonly sighted, drawn by the abundant prey. The park is also home to one of the largest populations of hippos and crocodiles in Tanzania, congregating in the Katuma River and its associated lakes during the dry season.
Beyond the megafauna, Katavi boasts a rich biodiversity. The park's varied habitats, including miombo woodlands, savannahs, and seasonal lakes, support many species. Birdwatchers can enjoy over 400 species, including the endemic yellow-throated sandgrouse and the striking saddle-billed stork.
Katavi's remote location ensures that it remains one of Tanzania's most unspoiled parks. Visitors can enjoy the park's natural beauty without the crowds, making for a more intimate and authentic safari experience. The park's dramatic landscapes, from vast floodplains to dense woodlands, offer stunning vistas and numerous opportunities for photography.
