Best Time to Visit

Mikumi remains visitable year-round, but conditions vary with rainfall.

June to October is the main dry season, when vegetation thins and wildlife becomes more concentrated around the Mkata River, pools and seasonal water sources; road conditions are generally easier.

January and February are green and warm with variable rainfall rather than a guaranteed dry spell.

March to May brings the heavier rains, lush scenery, taller grass and potentially muddy tracks.

November and December mark the short-rain transition, bringing fresh vegetation, active birdlife and changing wildlife distribution.

Travel Tips

  • Allow extra transfer time

If you are driving from Dar es Salaam, we recommend leaving some flexibility in your schedule because traffic can sometimes add time to the drive.

  • Stay overnight if you can

When travelling to Mikumi by road from Dar es Salaam, we recommend at least one night in the area so your Safari does not feel rushed.

  • Keep your binoculars close

Mikumi is rewarding for both wildlife and birdwatching, so keep binoculars within reach as you explore the plains, wetlands and woodland areas.

  • Explore beyond the open plains

If time allows, ask your guide to take you beyond the better-known open areas, where Mikumi's woodland habitats can offer a different wildlife experience.

  • Prepare for dry-season conditions

Toward the end of the dry season, expect warmer temperatures, dustier roads and drier landscapes, so light clothing, sun protection and drinking water are especially useful.

  • Take wetter months slowly

During the wetter months, some tracks can be slower and wildlife may be more spread out, so allow your guide enough time to explore the best areas.

  • Follow your guide in the park

For your safety and the protection of wildlife, remain inside the Safari vehicle unless your guide confirms that you are in an authorised area or taking part in an official guided activity.
