Mount Meru

Overview

About Mount Meru

Mount Meru, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), is the second-highest peak in Tanzania, following the famous Mount Kilimanjaro. Located within Arusha National Park, this dormant stratovolcano offers a unique and captivating experience for trekkers and nature enthusiasts.

Mount Meru is a prominent feature of the Great Rift Valley, characterized by its volcanic origins and a distinctive horseshoe-shaped caldera. The mountain's rugged terrain and impressive crater add to its allure, making it a less-explored but equally stunning alternative to Kilimanjaro. Its proximity to Arusha National Park provides an additional layer of natural beauty, with the peak offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including the distant Kilimanjaro.

Trekking Mount Meru typically takes between 3 to 4 days, which is shorter than Kilimanjaro’s standard climbs. The trek begins at the Momella Gate, where climbers are treated to a lush forest environment that gradually transitions into alpine meadows and barren volcanic landscapes. The ascent is noted for its diverse ecological zones, ranging from rainforest to arid highland, and offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Common sightings include buffaloes, giraffes, and various antelope species.

Wildlife

Trekking Mount Meru is like doing both trekking and walking safari as it allows viewing a variety of wildlife including the buffalo, warthog, giraffe, waterbuck, bushbuck, iland, leopard, and many others.
