Welcomed as an Honoured Guest
Between the Great Rift Valley escarpment and Lake Manyara National Park, Mto wa Mbu is home to people from more than 120 tribes: a place where cultures meet and hospitality is a way of life.
Step beyond the safari vehicle and into a Tanzanian home. Spend a day, or a night, with a local family in Mto wa Mbu, sharing their routines, their table and their stories.
This is not a cultural performance, a museum visit or a staged village tour. It is time with a local family, at their pace, sharing daily routines, walking the village, working alongside them on their farm and preparing a meal together.

Two Ways to Visit
Day Visit
Spend the day with your host family: a warm welcome and homemade breakfast, the village and its market, seasonal work on the family farm, and a traditional meal cooked and shared together.
Optional Overnight
Extend your visit to stay for the evening around the fire, sleep in locally hosted accommodation in the village and share breakfast with your hosts before continuing your safari.
Your Day With Your Hosts
Follow the Rhythm of Village Life
Your day begins with a warm welcome and a simple homemade breakfast, getting to know the family over freshly prepared tea or locally brewed coffee.
From there, the day unfolds naturally. Every family has its own traditions and every season brings something different.

Village & Market
Stroll the village streets with your hosts, greeting neighbours and meeting local artisans. At the colourful market, help choose the day's ingredients and learn about seasonal produce and traditional recipes.
Seasonal Farm Activities
Depending on the season, walk through banana plantations, vegetable gardens or nearby fields. You may help harvest vegetables, pick bananas, collect herbs, water crops or feed livestock.
Cooking Together
Back at the family home, prepare traditional dishes with the ingredients you gathered, cooked over charcoal or wood-fired stoves. Knead chapati, stir a pot of beans, or help with ugali or banana stew.
Sharing the Meal
Every meal is prepared together and enjoyed together. Long before anyone sits down to eat, the kitchen is filled with conversation, laughter and stories.
Activities follow your host family's own routines and change with the seasons, so no two visits are the same. These are genuine daily activities, not demonstrations.
Life Between the Moments
Some of the most memorable moments are the simplest: hearing Swahili in everyday conversation and learning a few phrases yourself, perhaps watching baskets being woven or wood being carved, or sitting in the shade of a mango tree sharing stories over tea. Nothing is rushed.
Evening & Overnight
Evenings Around the Fire
As daylight fades and the evening cool arrives, everyone gathers around the warmth of the traditional cooking fire. Evenings in the village are part of an extended visit with an overnight stay.
Shared Around the Fire
- Fresh maize roasted slowly over glowing charcoal
- Sweet potatoes baked in the warm embers
- Ripe bananas roasted until sweet
- Locally grown Tanzanian coffee brewed in a traditional kettle
Storytelling Time
Elders share tales of village life, local legends, wildlife encounters and family traditions. You are invited to share stories from your own life too, in conversations that cross language, culture and distance.
A Village Overnight
Sleep in locally hosted accommodation in the village. Wake to birdsong, roosters greeting the dawn and the rhythm of village life beginning again, then share breakfast with your host family before continuing your safari.
